The Missa solemnis is a solemn mass composed by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1819 to 1823. It was first performed on 7 April 1824 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is generally considered one of Beethoven’s supreme achievements, composed during the height of his career. Despite this critical recognition of the work, Missa solemnis has not achieved the same level of popular attention as many of his symphonies and sonatas have enjoyed. This will be a rare opportunity to see this majestic masterpiece performed, and there will be performances in both Johannesburg and Cape Town.
